Bartolome and San Salvador Islands

I slept so well! How couldn’t I when I went to bed with the colors of an eruption still in my eyes. At the end of the day today, I saw the eruption again, bright and beautiful, the forces of a young volcano in action.

In between eruptions, we did many other activities that fulfilled my heart. Early in the morning, we hiked to the top of Bartolome Island, and we distinguished all the volcanic features we could dream about. It was a great opportunity to compare what we have seen in action with the features that will form, and are being formed right now with the current eruption. We observed, and we talked about spatter cones, parasitic volcanoes, tuff cones, lava flows, and lava tubes. However, it wasn’t a day dedicated only to the geology. We landed on the tiny beach of Bartolome to snorkel and enjoy fish, penguins, and sea lions in the water. We also saw at least 20 sharks swimming very close to shore and a couple of American oystercatchers walking along the beach. The afternoon found us on San Salvador, an island with treasures such as fur seals, marine iguanas, ruddy turnstones, whimbrels, Galápagos hawks, Galápagos mockingbirds. We saw it all…and in the distance, the eruption.
