Española (or Hood) Island
What a wonderful day we all had! Our first activity was heading directly to the underwater realm of this wonderful place: crystal clear water reflecting an intense turquoise colour, black rocks that can be confused with sea turtles and different classes of fishes (plural of different species of fish). Some of us opted to go straight to a dazzling long white sandy beach, inhabited normally by just the sea lions, mocking birds, lizards and iguanas, to mention a few.
After our relaxing morning, we had a sinful lunch: it was tasty, colourful and plentiful. We all shared our experiences on board as we sailed on towards our next destination: the western part of Española Island, home of the waved albatross - and the famous blow hole. Española has an array of surprises for everyone: birds nesting right in front of us to witness, parental feeding, nest guard exchange, etc. Those willing to brave the terrain – it is a low shrubby island covered in rocks and boulders – are truly in for an unforgettable experience. Those preferring a more cautious option spent time on the beach area, crowded with sealions, mocking birds, red-and-turquoise marine iguanas and more, before taking on of our faithful Zodiacs to view the spectacular cliffs and myriad sea birds from the water.
At the end of this walk, we said good bye to our sea-lions and all our great experiences. Our expedition is coming to an end, but we sure know our lives will never be the same.
