Bartolome Island
Wow! This is the word that comes to my mind at this time, while I am trying to explain to you through these few paragraphs the wonderful day we all spent in this magical archipelago. Snorkelling today around Pinnacle Rock has been by far, by general consensus among my fellow Naturalists, one of best underwater activities we have had this year. The amount of wildlife was overwhelming. The list of species observed is quite long but I will just mention some of the highlights. With the aid of our underwater housing and digital video camera I had the thrill to record these sightings. Some of them were: marine iguanas swimming, Galápagos penguins fishing, Galápagos sea lions playing around us with acrobatic movements, thousands of fish in huge schools, sharks, rays and colourful invertebrates.
I want to mention a special sighting in particular that made my day today. Blue footed boobies were plunge diving in front of us just like swift javelins from the sky. This sighting by itself was great! But wait, the best is yet to be said. While I was trying to capture in video the bright blue feet of one of the boobies floating next to the camera the bird decided to dive from its position in front of me. For the very first time in the many years I have been guiding in the Galápagos, I actually observed the booby gulping a fish underwater! Needless to say I was enthralled with this rare sighting. At the evening during recap time we all watched this fortunate “fishing-booby event” through the plasma screens in the lounge. The latter experience is a living proof that the Galapagos Islands always bring something marvellous and new to be remembered. Wow!
