Isabela and Fernandina Islands

In the silence of the night, sailing on a smooth ocean that is lit by a bright moon, we see in the far distance islands that rise up like ghosts in the middle of the no where. Nocturnal white swallow tail gulls flying outside our windows, looking like angels, seem to be showing us the way. Everyone slept well last night.

Early in the morning, we are sailing along the northern coast of Isabela Island. This is a mystic place, where marine birds and mammals appear as if enchanted. Our guests are on deck with their binoculars patiently waiting. The ocean is calm and hundreds of marine birds pass by, but this time, the marine mammals do not appear.

Later we take a Zodiac ride along the cliffs of Punta Vicente Roca. This is one of the best places to look for the only two species of flightless marine birds on this planet: the flightless cormorant and the Galápagos penguin. Off shore we found the strangely shaped mola mola or oceanic sun fish, and many sea lions returning to the island after fishing at sea. The kayakers had a chance to paddle up quietly to sea turtles and sea lions and get a work out to boot!

Lunch time today was a delight; a traditional Ecuadorian buffet! Afterwards we needed a short siesta. In mid afternoon, we visited one of the most beautiful, pristine and the youngest Islands in Galápagos: Fernandina. We enjoyed a Zodiac cruise and then a walk. Here in the picture of a group of juveniles Galápagos penguins that we observed on our Zodiac ride.
