Isle of Skye
The sail from Inverie to Armadale on the Isle of Skye brings even more sightings of dolphins, after yesterday afternoon’s lucky encounters. On Skye we view the ruins of Armadale Castle, then make our way through the beautiful gardens to the Museum of the Isles. This tells the story of the Lord of the Isles, the Clearances and the Jacobites to name just a few.
After another delicious lunch, we board the coach to Sligachan, also on Skye. Here the hikers got off to explore the area and in one case even climb one of the peaks. Those more interested in history or gardens stayed on the coach until Dunvegan Castle. This is the Clan seat of the MacLeods of Dunvegan, and has been for almost 800 years! Some of the interesting artifacts displayed even include a lock of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s hair. Many of us are then drawn outside to wander through the gorgeous gardens, comprising of a circular, a walled and a water garden. After the return to the ship of the hikers and visitors to Dunvegan, the ship set sail to the island of Rum. This island is owned and run by Scottish Natural Heritage and worth a visit by nature lovers as well as anyone interested in quirky buildings, but more about that tomorrow….
