Torosay Castle, Isle of Mull, Oban

A five-minute coach ride brings us to Torosay Castle, and we are in for a treat. Mrs. James, the laird’s mum, takes us round personally! This very inviting castle, with signs on the furniture inviting you to have a seat, rather than keep you off, comes alive with the stories of her and her husband’s family and the history of this 19th century manor house. Our visit is rounded off with a walk around the extensive gardens, consisting of formal and informal areas. Great stuff!

During lunch we sail to the town of Oban, the hub of the area. Ferries come and go and quite a few visitors add to the population of 8,000. We visit the local distillery and, after learning how to make whisky, we have a wee dram. Then a shopping spree beckons for many of us.

Later on, Konia gives us insight into the history of the town and leads a walk up to McCaig’s folly. This was financed by the banker McCaig around 1900. After another gorgeous dinner many of us are drawn to the local pubs. What a fun-filled day!
