Kyle of Lochalsh, Inverewe, Eilean Donan & Plockton
The Lord of the Glens set off early for Kyle of Lochalsh. The garden lovers headed off by coach to the fantastic gardens of Inverewe. The journey took them through some stunning scenery like the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve and Glen Docherty past Loch Maree.
When Osgood Mackenzie inherited some money he decided to buy land and start a garden. This was from scratch, as there was only one small tree growing on that windblown peninsula at the time. The walled garden produced flowers and vegetables; the trees provided shelter. This was extended with rare shrubs and trees – from all over the world. The influence of the Gulf Stream allows plants to flourish that are quite tender, despite the gardens being further north than St. Petersburg.
The alternative tour took guests to Eilean Donan castle and the village of Plockton. The Castle was completely rebuilt in the early 20th century and is world famous, due to many films being filmed here, The Master of Balintrae and Highlander to mention just a few. Plockton village is a planned village with great charm. Lovely houses with very pretty gardens, boats and cabbage trees complete the peaceful picture.
In the evening we toasted to the great trip we’ve had, which unfortunately is coming to an end all too quickly. After another gorgeous meal, this one on a very Scottish theme, with Haggis, we had to make our way to our beds to get some sleep before tomorrow’s journey home.
