Tobermory, Isle of Mull

This morning we enjoyed a glorious sail up the Sound of Mull to Tobermory. Ian Bullock’s presentation on Scottish wildlife made us even keener to spot some of those treasures of Scotland.

After Konia’s brief on the history of Tobermory and its shopping delights, the Lord of the Glens berthed at Tobermory following a wee cruise around the harbor.

After lunch we set off to enjoy this multi-colored town. Some of us joined Konia on a guided tour, and some saved their energy for a hike with David Barnes and Ian Bullock later on. Everyone had fun watching the activities to do with the open day of the Lifeboat Association. This is a charity and institution, thankfully well supported by many people in Britain. In the bay a rescue involving a doll, a helicopter and the lifeboat was staged. The very modern Tobermory lifeboat was open to visitors, as was a very old lifeboat (named Frank Spiller Locke). But the funniest event of all was a raft race. Whether the rafts were made of benches and floats, buoys and polystyrene or of two bath tubs (!), it was a good laugh. Some ‘vessels’ capsized and some made it, a number of them with the help of a zodiac to pull them out. What fun!

The stalls at the fair were bursting with goodies to eat and drink and you could win an old pair of shoes or a box of chocolates at various raffles and games.

Once exhausted you could still drag yourself to the Tobermory Chocolate shop for a hot chocolate – or browse the many original shops in town before settling down for dinner and possibly a night out in the town’s pubs, and maybe even a bit of otter spotting.

A great Tobermory day was had by all.
