At Sea, English Channel
After rounding the northwest corner of France during the night the National Geographic Endeavour has cruised east through the day, along the north coast of Brittany in the southern English Channel. Although the sunrise found us in dense fog, the winds have been light and variable, and the seas almost glassy calm, giving us further hours to contemplate our intercontinental journey and relax before arriving in the fourth and penultimate nation of our voyage.
As usual, the day was full of erudition and sensual delights. The morning opened with a second talk from Peter on the details of the HMS Victory, and continued with a presentation from David on the many different birds we have encountered along our way. After lunch Shaun hosted the Lindblad Expeditions / National Geographic GeoBee, a geographic quiz, enlivened with fine prizes of wine and chocolates. In fact everyone got to enjoy some wine and chocolate, as the GeoBee was immediately followed by a special Swedish pancake tea (with penty of chocolate sauce) and then a second wine tasting, featuring fine Madeiras.
In the meantime we took a few moment to catch up with reading and emailing, went over our photos and even kept an eye out for the occasional seabird (mostly Northern Gannets). By the time our ship approached St. Malo, shortly after dinner, we were all feeling well rested and ready for new adventures in northern France.
