At Sea, Beagle Channel

“A journey is a person in itself, no two are alike and all plans, safeguards, policies and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip, a trip takes us” – John Steinbeck

And what a fabulous trip it has been! Since we embarked on the National Geographic Endeavour, we have traveled almost 4,000 miles and seen some of the world's most remote wilderness areas. Our journey began in Ushuaia and took us across the Drake Passage to the splendor of the Great White Continent – Antarctica. Our next destination was the magical island of South Georgia – the veritable Jewel of the Southern Ocean. Lastly, we visited the Falkland Islands – a windswept, invigorating wilderness in the South Atlantic. But today, as we sailed closer and closer to our final destination and readied ourselves for the inevitable good-byes, we did not lament the voyage’s finish, but rather rejoiced in its experiences. We relived the past 21 days’ events with one another; each of us harkening back to one or more moments that struck a particular chord in our hearts. Captain Lampe later wished us all a fond farewell, and offered his congratulations on such a splendid expedition. And to that we all raised a glass in toast…to the ship and its wonderful crew; to each other and the friends we’ve made; and to the journey that has been and the ones yet to come.
