Prospect Point

On the way back north this morning in Panola Straight at 0500 our Expedition Leader made an early wake up call for good light and landscape. We were surrounded with ice bergs and a snow covered alpine landscape. At 0730 the Captain parked the ship in shore fast ice at Lat 66 00 S. We then had the opportunity to go walking on the sea ice for an hour in a fairyland like landscape. It was a walk we all enjoyed immensely.

At 1000 we repositioned the ship to Prospect Point, the sight of an old British Base, at 66 26 S and made our first continental landing of the trip in a full snow blizzard. Once we started walking up the hill the wind dropped and everyone enjoyed a magnificent view and then came down on backs and bellies enjoying a snow slide in Antarctica. By 1500 at 65 49 S we were close to Larrouy Island and found a calm bay in which to kayak, again another first on our expedition. During dinner the ship made her way north into Grandidier Channel in broken sea ice also full of ice bergs, bergy bits, and growlers. The soft pink evening light while heading into the Lemaire Channel was astounding. On the north side of the Lemaire was a three masted sail ship dwarfed by the surrounding mountains. It reminded us of a time when the only ships to ply these waters were from the age of sail.
