At Sea, heading towards South Georgia
Today was a day of transition. It is the end of the Antarctic season for the National Geographic Endeavour and it was with a bit of sadness that we headed northeast all day, leaving the white continent behind. But, a fantastic new destination awaits us tomorrow in the likes of South Georgia Island, so emotions on board quickly switched to excitement over our high expectations for tomorrow.
All day we had a steady breeze and swell behind us pushing along with a gentle roll. Batteries were recharged, bellies filled, and minds cleared. We wove through a sculpture garden of icebergs and a constant progression of seabirds flitted about. We learned about the fragility of South Georgia, the history of the exploration of the southern continent, and examined photos we had taken.
But mostly we looked ahead to tomorrow, and will dream tonight of that first view we should have in the morning of South Georgia.
