At sea to Ushuaia, Argentina

After three weeks on board the National Geographic Endeavour our exploration of Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands is coming to an end. Approaching the Beagle Channel we close the circle that started with a southbound crossing of the Drake Passage. Those days and our time on the Antarctic Peninsula seem like a distant memory, such is the rich diversity of new experiences that we have packed into the time since then.

The final day at sea is a good time to sit and quietly reflect on the voyage. There is time to catch up on journal writing or organising images. Or it is time to simply sit and watch the wildlife of the Southern Ocean, to search for one last albatross, penguin, whale or dolphin; animals that have provided us with such rich entertainment. In a few days time these animals will still be here, living their lives while we return to our homes. Each person will have their own highlights to take home, and it may be many months or years before we can realise the full value of these experiences. We have been fortunate to have a chance to share in these riches and gain a better appreciation of the extraordinary world we live in.
