Espanola Island
This time of year not only provides us with spectacular views of the inflated frigate birds of North Seymour Island, but also the returning Waved albatross of Espanola Island. It is one of those times when we’re literally tripping over some iconic highlight every step of the way. And if this weekend were all we were to see of Galápagos, we’d leave in awe of having seen so much!
North Seymour was hot and steamy but the land was parched and dusty. In sharp contrast, our short ramble over the rocks of Punta Suarez led us along uncharacteristic narrow paths through thick vegetation. The point has receieved its dose of daily showers and today was to be no exception.
As we walked along towards the majestic cliffs teeming with birds and iguanas, the heavens opened and cooled off a potentially hot morning. Soon after, the skies were blue and the boobies and the chicks were drying off. We even saw an albatross drinking the rain water as it fell into its mouth. The vivid colors after the rain could really be appreciated in a pair of Blue Footed Boobies bickering on a drying rock. The long green grass surrounded the newly-nesting albatrosses and big hungry fat caterpillars were to be seen consuming entire bushes of the desert plum!
