Santa Cruz Island & Sombrero Chino

May is a wonderful month, when winds of change start blowing from the south, when the sky gets the most wonderful baby-blue coloration and when my favourite birds are back to the Galápagos Islands, waved albatrosses.

It is also when kids start their school year. Children walk on the streets with their uniforms, a bit nervous and at the same time happy, thinking about the new friends they'll make, the old ones they'll meet again and the challenges ahead. It is now, in May, that Lindblad Expeditions starts its third year participating in an amazing program called “Kids on board”. We have invited almost 400 children from different schools in the Galápagos onto the National Geographic Endeavour to discover what life is like on board. We explore the shoreline and islets around their home towns and our Naturalists give a talk about the uniqueness of their home islands.

Yesterday, we had 24 kids from a school in the highlands of Santa Cruz on the National Geographic Endeavour. Their small school is on the countryside of the island, where several grades share the same classroom and teacher. From ages five through twelve, we had almost the entire school on board. They had a blast! They could not believe we had so many books in the National Geographic Endeavour's library. The students spent quite some time marvelling at the illustrations in the wonderful National Geographic encyclopaedias we keep in our library. We enjoyed a wonderful Zodiac ride, in the company of sea lions and blue footed boobies, and of course, Sofia had organized a feast of sandwiches and ice cream in the lounge. One of their favourite things was the scale model of the first Endeavour of Captain Cook, at the entrance of the dinning room. They were amazed by the history of the old Endeavour, and of our National Geographic Endeavour as well. They wanted to know everything about the pictures of penguins and bears and whales that decorate the corridors of this fantastic ship. They had an unforgettable morning; we had an unforgettable morning!

With the energy of having provided such a memorable time to the children of the Galápagos, we awoke early today. We found sunrise iguanas at Cerro Dragon, and snorkelled around Guy Fawkes islet. The afternoon brought us penguins, both on the rocks and in the water. Nature has been generous to us. Lindblad Expeditions will always continue to give back to the Galápagos.
