Española Island

Española Island, located in the southern part of this remote archipelago, is a very especial one. Punta Suarez, the place where we disembarked today, gives you the right impression that everything you see around here is absolutely different from the rest of the islands. Today was a little busy; our young group of explorers was amazed with all the wildlife we encountered at every single step.

The time went by quickly as we observed how marine iguanas were swimming, showing off their efficient tails that work just as a propeller. Española marine iguanas are a unique species to the island and are found nowhere else in the Galápagos. These reptiles are different in size and colour when compared to others in the rest of the archipelago. Española lava lizards live here as well and even a Galápagos giant tortoise subspecies that is a probable ancestor of the famous Lonesome George from Pinta Island.

In the afternoon, just after receiving our add-ons for snorkelling, we got ready to leave the NG Endeavour and got immersed in a fascinating little world named Gardner Bay. Some guests had a great time underwater swimming with Galápagos sea lions while others were looking at them from our glass bottom boat. Some others opted to go to the beach and swam, strolled along the beach, practiced some stretching and took many photographs. Kayaking was another option as well. This activity gave guests the opportunity to move at their own pace and get closer to some places where we just can’t take them by Zodiacs or walking.
