Hood Island

After a nice gentle navigation last night, we arrived to Hood Island in the early hours of the day. We had a great, amazing day on the oldest island of the archipelago.

Hood is where we encountered some exceptional species of animals and plants only found on this island in particular. Here on Punta Suarez we saw a few Hood mockingbirds checking out our shoes, maybe looking for food or just plain curiosity. Nearby, a few Hood lava lizards and Galápagos marine iguanas were sunbathing together. Some of the lizards were resting on top of the iguanas, ready to remove parasites and old skin from them.

We sat down by the cliffs and saw Galápagos waved albatross flying above our heads, and we even found a vey small albatross chick being fed by one of its parents. We enjoyed our moment of solitude with the amazing landscape in front of our eyes.

The afternoon was spent at Gardner Bay where some learned to snorkel from the beach. Others a bit more experienced went to deep water snorkeling, kayaking, or glass bottom boat riding to look at the underwater world. The shoreline was packed with sleeping Galápagos sea lions while others joined us in the water while we were swimming.

We liked our first day on this island and now we are preparing to go to our next island tomorrow.
