Floreana Island
We arrived to Floreana Island early in the morning, just in time for our pre-breakfast visit to Post Office Bay. Heading towards the island we got to see the same place where, two centuries ago, whalers used to disembark, to get provisions in the way of giant tortoises. This area was also used as a Post Office, one of the only mailing systems of the southern pacific, back in those years.
We set foot on the island and took a 20-yard walk. Immediately we found an old wine barrel on a post still standing. It has a little opening where we can see a lot of postcards from the visitors who come here daily; we proceeded to follow the tradition, so some of our guests took many cards to hand-deliver, just as whalers did it in ancient times!
After our early morning’s visit and breakfast we had many options while visiting Champion Islet, which is located a nautical mile to the north of Floreana. Some of us went deep water snorkeling, and some others went glass bottom boating and zodiac riding. We found a lot of wildlife. The water was nice for snorkeling, and we also saw many Floreana mockingbirds, an endemic bird that is on the red list of endangered species.
In the afternoon we moved to a different spot on Floreana Island. This was a nice point with a beautiful brown green sandy beach called Cormorant Point. At this site we explored the coast in kayaks and some of our guests went to the beach for a walk and for swimming.
Later in the afternoon we formed groups to start a hike to the other side of Cormorant Point. While walking, we found a big brackish water lagoon with flamingos and a beautiful coralline sandy beach with sea turtle nests.
Every single activity we did during the day was accompanied by wonderful weather that gave us the chance to see, at the end of the day, an amazing sunset full of colors with clear skies!
