Floreana Island
Very early in the morning, we disembarked on Post Office Bay. This is a very special place in the Galápagos that I personally consider to be mystical and attractive. I have visited it joining my dad’s trips as an endemic Naturalist Guide around of the islands since I was a child and every time I’m back on this site, the sensation is the same.
The antagonism of the fresh air of the moment brings back memories of olden times on the archipelago. This reminds me of why Floreana Island will always have a strong story to tell about the history of The Enchanted Islands.
It is the island where the Bristish HMS Rattler arrived in 1792, to establish the first station for whale hunting, until it was displaced by the American Navy in 1812. Floreana Island also offered us a wonderful morning of snorkeling in Champion Islet. The visibility was great and it helped us to enjoy the whole diversity of fish while deep water snorkeling, and the magical corals in the shallower waters. Besides, we had a dingy ride around the Islet in pursuit of the Espanola mockingbird. We found at least six individuals!
In the afternoon, we spent time on Punta Cormorant, where the colorful flamingos of the lagoon close to the olivine beach and more than six turtles swimming just off the coraline beach were the main attractions.
