Floreana Island

Early in the morning, we had our first pre-breakfast outing to visit Post Office Bay at Floreana Island. We landed at the very historical mailing system in the south Pacific. An old wine barrel was placed by a whaler called James Colnett, in 1793. He thought it was a good idea to connect the early sailors with a mailing system in the South Pacific.

Still nowadays we keep this romantic tradition alive and leave our mail there so somebody can eventually take it and deliver it hand to hand, just like in ancient times.

After breakfast we went snorkeling and bird watching and snorkeling around Champion Islet; it was a highlight to swim with sea lions and colorful tropical fish like Yellow-tailed Surgeonfish, white-banded Angelfish, Sergeant Major, and Blue Parrot-fish.

The afternoon outings offered us several choices, kayaking, beach time and a nice easy stroll along the flamingo lagoon. This kept us updated with the life of the first settlers of the Mysterious Island.

The afternoon highlights were definitely the bright very pink wild flamingos we saw in the brackish water lagoon and the sun set.
