Floreana
This morning we woke up at Post Office Bay. The light was perfect, with the sun rising behind the clouds. Since this time of year it rains, the landscape looked different with lush vegetation and more. Some of us we went to visit the Post Office and had the opportunity to follow the tradition and collect and leave mail. This system, started in 1793, served whalers and was originally thought up by a gentleman named James Colnett. We also saw a Pacific green sea turtle digging a nest and laying eggs. It was magic.
We came back on board and while we had breakfast the National Geographic Endeavour moved towards Champion islet. Once we got there, most of us went snorkeling; others went to see fish through the glass bottom boat. After this we went for a dinghy ride to find the very elusive Charles mockingbird and we saw about six of them, so it was a success since its population is very small.
While snorkeling we saw fish like the King angel, salemas, yellow tailed surgeon fish, sea lions playing with us, hammer head sharks, grunts, etc.
After lunch we moved to Punta Cormorant where people went kayaking, to the beach and finally we all went for a walk to see the flamingo which is in courtship display and beautiful bright pink. We also saw Pacific green sea turtles and the beautiful talcum powder sand. The other type of sand was the olivine sand which is green. Crystals of olivine give that appearance.
It was a wonderful day and I am sure tomorrow will be even better.
