Bartolome & Santiago Island
Today we got up early in the morning and climbed 372 steps along the outfitting parasitic cones of Bartolome Island. These basaltic lava formations amazed us, just as if we were walking on Mars, but down on Earth. Once we got to the top of the island we could enjoy the incredible view of one of the most famous landscapes of the Galápagos Islands, the Pinnacle Rock and the beautiful beaches that cover the north and south parts of the island. Then we returned to the National Geographic Endeavour for a succulent breakfast to be ready for the next activities of the day.
Later in the morning we moved back to Bartolome Island and started our water activities which were snorkeling, glass bottom boat riding or just basking in the sun, enjoying the great weather that this day offered us.
During the afternoon we first had a very relaxing time on the beach of Puerto Egas on Santiago Island. Meanwhile, others hiked on Puerto Egas. Along the trail one could observe a huge variety of endemic and native plants to the islands, and some of the remains of what once was a salt mine. As we moved forward inside the island, the beautiful lava fields covering the shoreline were holding many species of shore birds such as ruddy turn stones, plovers, lava herons, oystercatchers and many others that would get our complete attention as soon as we spotted them.
At the end of the trail we saw the impressive grottos, wonderful geological features, with one of the species of sea mammals of the Galápagos which we were expecting to see. The Galápagos fur sea lions were easily seen around the grottos. Here we could compare the differences in size and physical appearance with the Galápagos sea lions, which were quite big if we looked carefully. As we walked back to the beach where we started, we spotted some Galápagos doves, finches and mockingbirds.
The afternoon was outstanding. Our last visit could not have been better. Heading back to the NG Endeavour once again, we know the Galápagos Islands have shown us their best.
