Floreana Island
Floreana is the first inhabited island in the archipelago. Today a small town is still there, and about 100 people live on it. In the past, the ones that tried to establish themselves on the island were several, but the ones that succeeded were few. Our first visit was an historical place: The Post Office Barrel. We continued a 200-year-old tradition by collecting the cards that were mailed by somebody close to our homes and by dropping ours off to be picked up by other passers-by.
After a Zodiac ride to look for the mockingbird, endemic to the island, (the Floreana mockingbird), we departed to snorkel or visit the glass bottom boat. We got to see sea lions, colorful tropical fish, rays and diving boobies.
In the afternoon we had an amazing visit to Punta Cormorant where flamingos were the stars of the show, but herons, stilts, ducks and whimbrels were invited to the party too. There was perfect light, all different species of birds, and the most beautiful sunset from the beach.
Back on board we enjoyed a bedtime story, told by our naturalist Magdalena, all about the mysteries on Floreana Island. Now… time to bed, let’s sleep and dream about the wonders that are waiting for us tomorrow.
