Floreana Island
Our day started early in the morning, we landed at 6:30 am at Post Office Bay. This place hides a wooden barrel behind some vegetation, which is the oldest mail system in the Pacific. For centuries, this barrel has been helping people communicate. It started with the whalers in the 18 century, and continues today with our guests who left their post cards to be hand delivered by future visitors. After this historic visit and a good breakfast, our next destination was Champion islet, home of the very elusive Floreana mocking bird.
Snorkeling was a highlight of the day; we saw white tip reef sharks, sea turtles, all different types of fish and playful sea lions.
In the afternoon, one of our options was kayaking, while another was a walk to look for flamingos at Punta Cormorant. We disembarked at a green beach of olivine to be surprise by a baby flamingo in the lagoon, no more than weeks old. The flamingo was very close to our trail. We walked slowly to get closer and observe this unique bird. At this young age the baby looks completely different from the colorful pink adult, it is white with a weird beak and is very shy.
A magical day on a magical island!
