Santa Cruz

Today at Santa Cruz we visited the breeding center at the Charles Darwin Station in the Galápagos National Park. Here we learned about the importance of the conservation work being done to keep introduced species out of the islands. The station is an important site that we visit with all our guests since it shows so well the threats and challenges facing the islands.

At Puerto Ayora, we watched some of the local sports at the harbor, which are a feature on this island. After having a good time in the restaurant and playing volleyball, we were ready to begin the activities. Once in the highlands, we were amazed by the pit craters that formed as a result of the collapse of giant lava tunnels.

Later on, we continued to enjoying the greenest zone of the island by watching the giant adult tortoises, mostly males, in the wilderness. Huge trees, a wide green land and the enormous size of these reptiles were the perfect combination to have a wonderful afternoon. Our day ended with a typical music presentation, where everybody in the lounge shared in a traditional dance and folkloric costumes.
