Punta Pitt & Leon Dormido
Our last full day in the Galápagos Islands was full of excitement and great highlights.
Our day began with a calm and easy Zodiac ride along the rugged tuff cliffs of Punta Pitt, the easternmost corner of this archipelago. We enjoyed the majestic presence of the red-footed boobies – perched on their bushes and trees on the steep cliffs, they were busy in their early morning preening sessions.
With the help of our well-trained naturalists, we learned about their lives and habits, their different colorations, their feeding habits and more.
After the nice ride, we wet landed at a beautiful sandy beach full of glittering mineral crystals.
We started a power walk that took us through a steep gully. Rivers of freshwater have carved this gully through the rainy seasons. The highlight of the hike was seeing a huge tuff cone that has been shaped by natural elements giving it a fabulous look, the light hits the cone in such a way that pictures came out great.
Swimming time at the beach of course felt superb as we were all so hot from the walk. This is still the hot season in the Galápagos, the air temperature is around the nineties, the equatorial sun feels very hot. It’s humid but the water feels nice and still warm, the water is still around 73-80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the area.
The afternoon highlight was of course snorkeling around the deep, deep walls of Kicker Rock. or Leon Dormido. and later having drinks at the outside bar at the bow of the ship and enjoying the tour around this massive tuff cone that emerged from Neptune’s realm.
At night we landed in the happy town of Puerto Baquerizo at San Cristobal Island and chatted with the locals, ate, shopped, had a drink, danced a little bit at local clubs and shared a couple of hours with these gentle and friendly people.
It has been a week we are never going to forget.
