Punta Pitt and Leon Dormido
We started a wonderful morning with a refreshing and relaxed zodiac ride around Pitt Islet to enjoy the company of a large array of different marine species that live around and on it. First of all, sea lions are particularly friendly in this corner of the archipelago, and they approached the zodiacs as soon as we hit the shores of the islet.
We saw frigatebirds nesting, red-footed boobies perched on salt bushes, swallow-tailed gulls, Nazca boobies, and lots of bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs. After the zodiac ride, hikers walked up to the summit of a beautifully eroded tuff cone known as Punta Pitt; the highlight of the walk was of course the marvelous view from the cliffs across the horizon.
The afternoon outing was for snorkeling around the spectacular formation called Leon Dormido. This was by far the best snorkeling of the week; the water temperature is still 74 degrees Fahrenheit and the outside temperature is very agreeable and somewhat cool and breezy. May is really a nice time of the year to visit the Galápagos.
This was the best way to end our dream week in the islands.
