Isabela Island
Today we landed at Urbina Bay at the foot of Alcedo Volcano. This place is ideal for land iguanas in the wild; at this time of the year some land iguanas are still displaying their best colors of the year (the breeding color). Territorial males are still patrolling their land and cleaning their territories. On the other hand, females are not as conspicuous. They mostly have a black or dark brown coloration and are smaller in size.
Here at Urbina Bay we went for a long walk and some of us took the option of the short walk. Both options were great, as we had the opportunity to see large land iguanas and giant tortoises. At the end of the activity we all had the chance to stop on the beach and swim before returning to the ship.
In the afternoon we moved to another location on the same island, Tagus Cove, with its one-of-a-kind landscape full of details from its volcanic past: lava and layers of volcanic ash are the main features.
Snorkeling was fun… lots of big sea turtles completely undisturbed by our presence as we explored the underwater scape, but penguins, cormorants, pelicans and blue-footed boobies turned out to be the great highlight.
Late in the afternoon we landed again, this time for a power walk to enjoy the landscape of the cove and exercise a little. We explored the volcanoes until we reached the summit of one of them. Later on, we returned very inspired by the dose of prime nature and wishing a cool drink at the bar.
