Floreana Island

An early start at Punta Cormorant brings us sighting of lagoon birds such as the Galápagos flamingo and black-necked stilts. This place has unique flora as well, such as the Scalesia villosa, an endemic species typical of the dry zone, as well as sandalwood, acacia and lantana, amongst other plants that are still in bloom as the result of the arrival of the misty season, known locally as La Garua

The nesting ground of Pacific green sea turtles shows an innumerable amount of nests that have been quite active throughout the warm season, which is now coming to an end.

After breakfast, the National Geographic Endeavour has anchored nearby Champion Islet; here a flotilla of Zodiacs circumnavigate this extinct volcanic cone, where we find the nearly-extinct Floreana’s mockingbird, as well as red-billed tropicbirds, Galápagos shearwaters, brown noddy terns and an endless colony of sea lions!

Snorkeling proves to be quite successful; we get to play with and mimic the playful sea lions and sightings of reef fish are abundant in today’s crystal clear waters, with temperatures in the low 70’s.

After lunch, the National Geographic Endeavour anchors at Post Office Bay, where we keep alive the tradition of picking up and delivering mail left by fellow travelers.

Soon afterwards, we go for a second Zodiac ride, where we observe Pacific green sea turtles, sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and pelicans, amongst others. Some of us have the opportunity to kayak among all of these creatures…

Successful wildlife sightings are our reward at the end this day!
