Seno Agostini and Seno Almirantazgo

Despite the fact that we experienced some liquid sunshine this morning, we were still able to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Seno Agostini. The Captain and the Bridge Officers brought the National Geographic Endeavour right up to the face of this tide water glacier, an impressive feat of navigation that offered us the opportunity to take some wonderful photos. After a hearty breakfast, we spent some more time on deck before we joined Shaun Powell for his presentation on the marine mammals of Chile. Shortly afterwards, we sailed through Gabriel Channel, and as we were marveling at the steep, ice-scoured mountainous scenery, we spotted some Andean condors. These creatures have the distinction of being the world’s heaviest flying bird.

After a mandatory nap, Max Morales gave us an introduction to the wines of Chile. It was a fascinating talk, and we were left with great anticipation of our future wine tasting session! Soon afterward, we dropped anchor off Seno Almirantazgo. It was a beautiful fjord with tall mountain peaks, and we were fortunate to have some very peaceful weather. There was hardly a breath of wind and not even a hint of drizzle. We went ashore and walked along the narrow beach soaking up the beauty of our surroundings. Our ‘beach’ disappeared quite quickly with the fast-rising tide, but the timing was perfect as we were whisked away by the Zodiacs and taken to a small spit of land where we found a wallow of Southern elephant seals, the largest seals in the world. We spent a wonderful afternoon in a beautiful part of the world, and we retired this evening looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures.
