At Sea, Tropic of Capricorn

Since we left Tristan de Cunha a few days ago, we have been transiting to a warmer, calmer sea. We packed away the rubber boots, rain gear, fleeces, hats, and gloves. Gone are the kelp, biting cold wind, and overcast sky. The pool is full and warm, the sun shining, and the sea nearly flat. The sea is crystal blue and deep, around 4,000 meters in most places. Animal life has certainly diminished. Gone are the albatross, spectacled petrel, and myriad of prion species. Coming now are the terns, Bulwer's Petrels, and tropicbirds. For the last few days, it has felt like we were in the tropics.

Well, today we actually crossed the line (aka the Tropic of Capricorn) and are officially in the tropics. Flat seas, sunny skies, warm temperatures, and flying fish confirmed that we had arrived. A variety of presentations dragged us inside throughout the day, but most of us soaked up our time on deck. Whether sunning on the foredeck or reading a book on the aft deck, it was a glorious day spent sailing northward towards St. Helena.
