At sea
Days at sea are spent in various ways. For some, it is a time to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew. For others, reading, reviewing photos, or simply gazing out at sea. Dreaming of the next landing or of future destinations is also a normal activity. However, for many of us, sitting on the bow or bridge and watching for wildlife is the way to spend the day.
Early today, the sea was flat and calm, and made for great viewing. A few groups of dolphins were observed and various birds passed by. One large group of pilot whales was spotted and we moved in for a closer look. Also with the group was a nice pod of bottlenose dolphins, and they decided to approach our vessel for a bit of play time. As we slowly moved through the water we pushed a wave in front of us, and the dolphins came for a surf. Bowriding is always fun to watch, and bottlenose dolphins are the masters of it.
With the crystal clear water, it was a joy to look down on them as they played on our bulbous bow. They would get into the “sweet spot” and not need to use any energy to move forward, only rolling about to look up towards us. Constantly communicating, their squeaks could be heard by those of us leaning over the bow.
What a way to spend a day!
