The Baltic Sea

Due to the cluster of large islands off the west coast of Estonia, our transit into the Bay of Riga kept us sailing through the day and into the night today. And though it meant we had to wait a little while longer to see our next port of call in this journey through the Baltic Sea, we were glad for the time on board our comfortable vessel.

We woke in no particular hurry this morning, content to know we had the entire day to indulge our minds and bodies in some needed rest and relaxation after a productive, but bustling, start to our voyage. Three capitals in three days have left our cameras full, our minds reflective, and some of our feet a tad weary.

And so today, we delighted in the opportunity to look back on the cities of St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and Tallinn while cosseting ourselves with some of the many creature-comforts available here on the National Geographic Explorer.

With calm seas beneath our keel, each of us found ways to enjoy the surprisingly warm and sunny day at sea. Whether being pampered in the spa, reading up on our next stop (or perhaps even our next voyage) in the library, or igniting our creative flame in the writing seminar, we found ‘activity’ and ‘relaxation’ are not necessarily opposing terms.

By the time the sun sizzled into the sea, we had learned a few more things about the places we’ve already visited and also piqued our interests for the days ahead.

Now, with our minds and bodies re-invigorated, we look forward to discovering Riga tomorrow.
