Drake Passage
After leaving the shelter of the Beagle Channel late last night, we entered the Drake Passage and began our journey south. South. Heading towards this mysterious land known as Terra Australis Incognita. Antarctica, the opposite of the north, is our destination.
All day, our seabird companions are escorting us on our voyage. The largest of all, the Wandering Albatross is constantly around the ship. Eleven feet of wingspan soaring close to a window or passing nearly in arms reach on deck gives a feel for the size of this massive bird, and a prelude to the size of what is to come.
Expectations are high. What awaits us? Penguins, whales and seals are mentioned, but I am looking forward to the overall size of Antarctica. Tabular bergs, tall peaks and never ending light await us further to the south. Today was a day of preparation and tomorrow we should awake with our first views of the land of ice.
