At Sea

We finally started our return trip last night and awoke this morning still in the waters of the Antarctic realm. The ship was quiet, as all were likely dreaming about the penguins, seals, and whales we saw on this amazing journey. Memories of the penguins and their antics bring smiles to our faces. The power and grace of the humpback whales comes to our minds as we sail the Drake Passage.

Slowly the ship started to come to life, as everyone wanted to catch the last glimpse of the Antarctic waters. Many watched the rolling swells of the Southern Ocean as we passed through the Antarctic Convergence from the cozy interior of lounge or library, with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee in their hands. Travelers spent the morning and the afternoon pouring over their photos to choose their favorite to share with other fellow travelers in a photo sharing exposition tomorrow.

This morning, Stefan Lundgren shared his thrilling adventures working as a crane operator on an Indian expedition to the harsh eastern side of Antarctica. As a photographer, Stefan offered us one-of-a-kind images of the unforgiving eastern Antarctic landscape, so different from the Antarctic Peninsula we just had the privilege to visit. In the afternoon, Peter Hillary delighted us with tales of his father, Sir Edmund Hillary. His inspirational stories of their journeys to the most extreme places on Earth leave all of us with the desire of exploration.

As the evening approaches, radiant sunlight and clear skies provided the perfect ambience for reflecting on our experiences over the course of this fantastic expedition. With albatrosses as faithful companions, we continue our journey back to Ushuaia.
