At sea, from Madeira to the Azores
After four very busy and glorious days enjoying the lush island of Madeira, it was nice to board our home away from home, the National Geographic Explorer. A busy packed schedule exploring Madeira didn’t allow much time for presentations or relaxing, so on our day at sea, this was the plan. Downloading memory cards and recharging batteries were certainly in order. But the main object of the day was getting reading for our coming adventures in the Azores. Whether it was an introduction with a geological or photographic focus, or learning of the amazing work by Greg Marshall and the Crittercam team, our varied presentations prepped us for the days ahead.
As we transited towards the Azores, keen eyes on the bridge worked hard for a few good sightings. A number of seabirds were spotted, including quite a few Bulwer’s Petrels. Distant Fin Whales were exciting as well. A few oddities were spotted including Portuguese Man-of-wars and a Loggerhead Turtle. Mostly though, today was a day for finishing our amazing time in Madeira and getting ready for some incredible new adventures ahead in the Azores.
