Sine-Saloum Delta National Park, Senegal
Several days of busy activities gave way to a morning at sea today, as we transited from Dakar to the Sine-Saloum Delta National Park. We finally had an opportunity to formally meet the incredible compliment of staff who will accompany us on this expedition through West Africa. Historian, David Barnes offered a thoroughly entertaining and informative talk about the Portuguese Exploration of Western Africa and the culture of crusade that has influenced both regions repeatedly.
The shallow waters of the Sine-Saloum Delta created the opportunity for an extended Zodiac ride to shore on this pleasantly breezy afternoon. The National Geographic Explorer was still a substantial presence on the horizon as we arrived on the Ile des Oiseaux, Island of Birds. We were met by Colly Sarr, the President of the Ecology Association of Niombato that oversees the local EcoCulture Center. With the help of 15 volunteers they work to raise public awareness about issues of deforestation and conservation and provide environmental education in elementary schools.
Island of Birds plays host to 21 species of birds, including Caspian and Royal Terns, Kelp and Gray-headed Gulls, Great and Long-tailed Cormorants, Pelicans and the African Darter. We have arrived in the middle of one of the two breeding seasons. From March to May, Caspian Terns lay two to three eggs in the sand on the point of the island. Those not overhead, loudly warning us to keep our distance, were nestled over their unhatched eggs, protecting them from the heat of the day. Caspian Terns have a two-fold system of desalinization so that they can drink water directly from the sea. In addition to filtration in their kidneys, they have a gland in their skull, at the base of their vibrant red bills, which assists in the secretion of salt. In a few months, from June to September, Herons and Egrets will also nest here, on top of the mangrove trees.
By the time we arrived in the Lounge for Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Party, the ship had arrived in The Gambia, at the capital city of Banjul.
