Drake Passage
We awoke this morning to brilliant blue skies and rolling seas. Many were out on deck early, eager for their first glimpse of the albatrosses and other seabirds zooming around the ship. Several of the giant 12-foot wingspan wandering albatrosses soared with the ship throughout the day.
It was a very relaxed afternoon as many of us enjoyed the “down” time to catch up on our reading or have a short nap. We enjoyed John’s Kernan’s presentation on the seabirds of the Southern Ocean. Later in the afternoon, we had a chance to learn from two incredible photographers, Paul Nicklen and Rich Kirchner. Their amazing images inspired and encouraged us to take many photos during our journey.
Then there was just enough time to change into our finery for Captain Philip Dieckmann’s Welcome Cocktail Party. The Master of the National Geographic Explorer formally welcomed us aboard and introduced us to his Senior Officers. We all had a very enjoyable evening that was rounded off by a superb gala dinner.
