Drake Passage

Happy Valentine’s Day! Neptune has been kind to us and we have enjoyed a quiet crossing of the infamous Drake Passage. There was very little wind but we did see a few seabirds following the National Geographic Explorer.

In the morning we went to our meet all of the Expedition Staff and heard a bit more about the plans for our long voyage. There was also a chance to visit the Wellness Center and to check out the best gym in the Southern Ocean.

In the afternoon we heard from John Kernan about Southern Ocean sea birds. His presentation outlined all the amazing sea birds we might encounter during our trip and we learned a bit more about the natural history of the various species. The second presentation of the day was by National Geographic photographer Kent Kobersteen who showed us many of his stunning photos and gave us tips on how to improve our photography skills while in Antarctica.

The last big event of the day was the Welcome Cocktail Party and Dinner. The ship’s galley went all out with fresh pasta and a very special Valentine’s desert. It was a lovely ending to our first full day onboard.
