Isla Cies & Bayona

Our voyage continues south along the Atlantic coast of Spain. After several days of intense cultural experiences it was time to change the pace and Isla Cies was a perfect place to wind down.

These dramatic rocky islands just off the coast of Galicia were bathed in early morning sunshine as we headed ashore by Zodiac. The islands are a protected reserve area and the wide sandy beach was more or less deserted as we arrived and spread out in search of wildlife, enjoying the hiking or simply relaxing on the beach.

Over lunch, the National Geographic Explorer repositioned a little farther south to the small town of Bayona. Here we went ashore, free to independently explore the town in this last stop on the Spanish leg of our journey.

Tomorrow we will arrive in the final country of our European Odyssey – Portugal – complete with the changes and contrasts that have become a central part of this journey.
