Cooper & St. Andrew’s Bay, South Georgia Island
The end of an unusually calm crossing of the Scotia Sea was heralded by large tabular bergs grounded in the shallows of South Georgia’s mist-shrouded shore. As we rounded the southwest corner we felt the first winds that define this island’s realm.
Cooper Bay gives us the first inkling of the richness of this sub-Antarctic oasis. New species are added to our list of wonders collected during our Antarctic passage.
The afternoon finds us at St. Andrew’s Bay, one of the major King Penguin rookeries. Fur seals with their dark lanugal pups, Elephant seals in flatulent chorus, brigades of Kings in dress uniform standing at attention, all paying homage to the regal landscape of this majestic place. We know that the long journey from our distant homes has been well worth the effort.
