Dartmouth, England

This morning we sailed up the River Dart and Captain Kruss expertly moored the ship just opposite the town of Dartmouth. This historic deep water port is the home of the Royal Navy officer training college. Interestingly, the harbor used to be protected at night by a chain stretched across its entrance to stop invaders and pirates!

Before heading ashore, the Town Crier came aboard National Geographic Explorer to warmly welcome us to this scenic part of England. We then had lovely walking tours of the town seeing houses from the late 16th century and St. Saviour’s church built in 1335. We also learned about the connection to the Pilgrim Fathers as they stopped in Dartmouth before sailing to America on the Mayflower. There was another American connection as this port was used as a base for American GI’s and a departure area for the D-Day landings.

In the afternoon, we had the chance to hike up the hill and see Dartmouth Castle. There was plenty to be discovered wandering around this charming town. The tea shops were busy with the chance to sample the wonderful Devon cream teas!

In the evening, during Captain’s Welcome Cocktail’s, several local dignitaries including the mayor, were aboard as guests. We all enjoyed a delicious welcome dinner before sailing out the River Dart.
