Falklands, Port Stanley
Another morning at sea. Of course we were kept busy with briefings on the natural history of the Falklands and catching up on a bit of reading, but most are feeling rather worn from being at sea for over two full days. We are all ready for a bit of stable ground that isn’t rocking and rolling under our feet.
Port Stanley provided the perfect escape from the rolling Southern Seas. People were split between taking a highlights tour of Stanley or getting land legs back and walking to our hearts content. Those who took the guided tour saw the wreck of the Lady Elizabeth, a three masted schooner that was blown in a storm to be forever grounded on the far end of Stanley Harbor.
The only cathedral in this part of the world was a definite photographic stop. The whale bone archway outside was a reminder of the not too distant past. A drive by of the local totem pole of distances to other towns and cities as well as a close up viewing of several re-assembled whale skeletons gave an interesting point of view to the history of the Falkland Islands.
Later on, walking around the town there was lots of shopping to do, many penguin gifts to buy, and chocolate to supply our tastes until an arrival at home. Finally, most seemed to filter their way into the infamous Globe Tavern for a pint of beer and a plate of fish n’ chips. Music kept everyone hopping and interesting locals kept conversation flowing as freely as the good times were.
