Española Island

Pleasant as it could be, the morning was almost perfect for those who chose to take a pre-breakfast kayak along the rocky northern shore of Española Island, the oldest of all the islands in the Galápagos archipelago. It was a good workout that opened our appetites. Right after breakfast, we were all ready for the last full day of the expedition: snorkeling, kayaking and beach exploration were popular options. The combination of these activities put us in great spirits and by noon we were like we have been every day: tired but happy. Nothing a good power nap couldn’t fix, just following a well deserved lunch of course!

During the afternoon’s exploration at Punta Suarez, we found ourselves in a trance while watching the many boobies that were nesting. Both blue and Nazca boobies were courting, incubating and feeding their young chicks. But as romantic as we all are, we felt a little dismayed to learn that the albatross have all gone for the season. However, we had the blessings of the avian lord when, all of the sudden, a couple of albatrosses materialized and flew in front of thirty eight pairs of astonished eyes; we were all wooing and applauding. A grand finale for an outstanding week; once again the forces of nature worked together creating a master piece to be admired, respected and shared with everyone here.
