Urbina Bay & Punta Moreno, Southern Isabela Island
Every day in this magical archipelago gives our lives a reason to celebrate. We compiled during our expedition around these far away realms a long list of sightings, feelings, discoveries and anecdotes. These hard-to-explain emotions will stay in our hearts and minds forever. In the morning we hiked on Urbina Bay, a remote location at the base of Alcedo volcano. Land iguanas, Galápagos giant tortoises and the fascinating geological formations made this walk a real success. After the walk we practiced some activities on the beach. One of the highlights was a water stretching session conducted by our Wellness specialist, Hilda Sarmiento.
The afternoon was not less spectacular. Several guests opted to hike on Punta Moreno. This place is certainly one of a kind. All around you can see enormous black lava flows that make you think you are back in pre-historic times or visiting another planet. Some guests opted to explore the area by Zodiacs. The Zodiac ride we made this afternoon was one of the best we have had lately in this location. We counted not less than seventy Galápagos penguins in one spot. Taking into consideration that the whole population on the islands of these beloved marine birds is only around 1,700 individuals, the number of penguins we observed is truly amazing! Nesting frigate birds, several schools of graceful golden rays and marine turtles mating provoked the admiration of their observers. Once onboard at cocktail hour everybody was happily raving about their own particular favorite highlights of the day. Internally, I felt a sincere admiration to see how strong and enduring the fascination of what we have experienced today can be.
