Floreana Island

This morning we woke up willing to explore this new island! The first place we visited was Post Office Bay, very famous for its importance as a connection point for the early voyagers such as whale hunters, seal hunters and early explorers.

Post Office Bay was one of the main ports of call during the whaling era for so many reasons: mainly food supplies, fresh water and wood to cook the blubber of the whales. Furthermore this place has the only functional post office in the region for the returning ships.

Late in the morning we boarded the Zodiacs for a ride around Champion islet located on the north side of Floreana Island. This small rocky speck happens to be a stunning snorkeling site, but first thing after breakfast, the Zodiac ride would take us to the cacti forest in search of the elusive Floreana mockingbird.

In the 1830s Charles Darwin, the great naturalist, set foot on Floreana and here collected his specimens of plants and animals, including mockingbirds. Nowadays Floreana mockingbirds continue living only on the satellite islands of Floreana and the populations are no more than a few dozen.

Later on we headed for the snorkeling site. It was unbelievable to swim through layers and layers of fish of different types, colors and sizes.

In the afternoon we had a fantastic time kayaking along the cliffs and shore of Floreana. Then we landed at Punta Cormorant for a relaxed walk and explored the flamingo lagoon. This place is spectacular for birders; besides the flamingos you can find a number of migrant birds from different places around the world.

I can’t wait to see more!
