Bartolome & Santiago Islands
The sun rays were reflected on the hill of Bartolome, the central most island of the archipelago. We commissioned ourselves to climb up to the very summit of this secondary volcano off Santiago’s main one; to enjoy the fabulous view that one has from there. It was a lot of fun and in spite of the 372 steps we had to go up, the joy we experienced put any hint of tiredness out of our minds.
There are a number of pioneer plants all around, most of which are in bloom denoting the tenacity of life in such an area like the hot grounds of tephra of this island. Every one of us was overjoyed by what we saw; every one of us had a big intake of benign energy from nature, every one including that young sea lion that was playing (rather abusing!) with the swimming marine iguana drew a huge smile to our faces at the end of the hike.
Later on we went snorkeling around Pinnacle rock and we were escorted by some sea lions and so many fish… exhilarating!
The afternoon came placid with intense sunlight that gave us the warmth of the tropics mixed up with the pleasant breeze from the ocean. Along the coastline the beach morning glories displayed their pink flowers while the palo santo trees have started to decline in their foliation. However… death had knocked on this island’s door. We found a dozen of marine iguanas dead in certain ponds that were extensively filled with algae. There were also many more iguanas in these ponds – in very good health - which make us think of a kind of natural event that helps to control the population.
Even though this is just a lucubration, it is for sure our intention to find out what kind of provision nature has as a manner of prevention. We shall find out what happened with these iguanas, whereas no one among them seemed to be in mourning.
