Floreana Island

All our guests were eager to go to Post Office Barrel and of course, way ahead from the landing time, most were already at the lounge warming themselves up to re-enact the historical tradition. Reading the addresses was funny and everybody was expectant for picking up a post card to deliver in the old-fashioned way. May they meet new friends?

In terms of wildlife, we were astonished by the contact we made with an adorable lava lizard. She just came as what she is: the owner of the place. She crossed among most of our feet and once she reached her place, she looked to us as if saying, “So what?”

Time passed by and during the return on board, being on the Zodiacs we were all chatting and already seeking for what was coming next. The ride around Champion Islet was great. We were escorted by dozens of young sea lions that, beyond their natural curiosity for us, made us think about how pleasant the water was. Hundreds of sea birds passed over our heads making different loud chirping sounds characteristic of each of the species. By that time we were ready to go snorkeling in the beautiful waters surrounding the islet.

The snorkeling was a remarkable experience. Difficult to express what one feels once in the water. The visibility was almost infinite all the way to the bottom. 300 feet? Maybe more. The sea lions that earlier had been inviting us, didn’t fail to be there. So cute and curious, they made the day for all of us.

In the afternoon we walked along the trail at Punta Cormorant. Unlike the last three weeks, today the flamingos were much closer and we also recognized several other species of shore birds and waders. It was a good surprise to see rain clouds being formed, yet no rain ever fell upon us, but moreover it was interesting (and really, really good) not to have a single mosquito.

The exploration of this place overwhelmed us again; this is, to be honest, what happened through the whole week in every single place we visited. So, we will expect the best for tomorrow. But tomorrow is still so far… we still have a lot of today to sip and enjoy.
