Bartolome & Santiago Islands
Our day started with a nice sunrise, typical here in the Galápagos for this time of the year. The island of Bartolome looked just beautiful, as the first rays of light were hitting the slopes, giving all over a golden shade, great for photography.
These types of islands are great for coming to understand the geological events that have occurred in the Galápagos for millennia, ever since the very formation of the islands. Its pinnacle rock formation and the view of several islands from the summit of Bartolome were the reward for all of us who decided to attend the early morning call. It was later in the morning that we decided to hit the beach for water activities such as swimming and snorkeling.
The large amount of wildlife is not only found on land, but underwater as well. It was precisely here where many highlights of the day were observed. Schools of several species of fish, as well as large animals were a common sight for our guests during the snorkeling. Even penguins made their appearance, as several of our guests had the chance to observe the incredible ability of these little creatures to hunt and prey on their favorite food, the black stripped salemas.
After enjoying our typical Ecuadorian lunch, we continued with our navigation to our next destination, Santiago Island. A second round of snorkeling was great for the avid swimmers and snorkelers, and the late afternoon walk was a great complement to the already great afternoon. Here we observed the two species of sea lions in the Galápagos as well as several hundreds of marine iguanas, resting peacefully along the shoreline.
It was already six in the afternoon when we found ourselves making our way back to the ship, after enjoying our first full day at the Islas Encantadas, as the sailors from the old times use to call them.
