Urbina Bay & Punta Moreno

Today we awoke surrounded by one of the most beautiful venues of volcanoes in the world. These volcanoes, Alcedo, Sierra Negra and Sierra Azul are the highest points in Galápagos. Before breakfast we headed towards the coral field. We had a wet landing on a beach seldom visited, except by turtles. In 1954 an uplifting took place for miles along the coast, exposing all that was underwater to the sun’s rays. Giant pieces of coral appear out of place among the sand; as well as the remains of sea life forced by nature from their homes into the wrong habitat.

On our way back to the National Geographic Islander we spotted many land iguanas. After breakfast, we had a quick swim and a short sailing to Punta Moreno, one of the most beautiful lava fields off the coast of Isabela.

As we disembarked on the flat black lava, it appeared lifeless, but little by little we were proven wrong. Galápagos daisies, cactus and even ferns were seen; finches, brackish water lagoons and flamingos displayed themselves in front of us. Even the rare Galápagos martin was spotted by our eager birdwatchers! Our return was eased by Zodiac rides along the coast. What a memorable day!
